Overview
Taking fiber has never been something I have experienced myself in terms of supplementation, however I have always paid attention to my fiber intake through my diet. I always made sure that I have enough fiber through fruits and vegetables but I’m not an expert so I was never actually sure if all that food amounted to enough. I always felt it was though because it seemed to help my bowel movements along as I’d hope most of the time because sometimes it would not do the trick. I guess maybe supplementation is better after all when it comes to fiber intake because at least you know exactly how much you’re getting and at the same time it is handy as well.
Imagine if you are a person that needs to maintain a certain amount of fiber in the body and there are none available in supplement form, then you would have to carry around baskets of fibrous fruits and veggies. Some people though, don’t like high amounts of fiber whether it is through supplementation or from high fiber foods, maybe it is the cramping and bloating that it brings but if you ask me those are minor discomforts for keeping a healthy colon.
Fiber
Before we are able to better determine what is the best time to take fiber we need to know first how it works, this is so because we have individual needs and according to how fiber may affect you, we can possibly try to decide what is the best time for fiber intake. Fiber’s main function in the body is to aid in digestion, its main characteristic that makes this possible is its sponge like properties which allow it to absorb many times its
weight therefore coupled with hefty amounts of water it can ease elimination thereby being a good relief treatment for constipation.
This cleansing effect also allows fiber to help in various health concerns like cholesterol level issues and colon health. The idea is that it has the ability to bind itself with harmful fats and cholesterol and carry it out of the body through consistent bowel movement and same goes with harmful toxins that reside in the colon. It is eliminated from the body before it can do any damage to the colon’s tissue linings. However since it does not differentiate the substances it absorbs it can also eliminate vitamins and nutrients from the food we eat before it can be absorbed by the body and if there is a lack of water it can also cause constipation as it swells up in the colon.
So what’s the best time to take it?
According to how it works, it would be best to take it when there is no need for much activity after taking it and when there is no immediate important need for your body to absorb nutrients. Reason being, we do not want to be caught in traffic or in the office somewhere and feel the need for bowel movement and we also do not want the vitamins we consume to go to waste. So I would say some time in the afternoon when you’re about done with work and any medication has been taken or will be taken later tonight when the fiber has already done its job.
