Be it any disease, the most susceptible are children and elderly. In case of children this is mainly due to their growing age and low immunity.

Our body develops immunity as we grow, and is therefore low in children. They can be affected with all kinds of viruses and bacteria irrespective of being at home or school. Amongst the various diseases that they acquire research has proved that they are almost 60% vulnerable to get viruses from bloodborne pathogens.

To begin with, all the school staff must be well educated about the dangers of spread of bloodborne pathogens to the children while at school. They must be well-informed about the safety measures that need to be taken when children are making use of toilets, playing in the ground and classrooms as well. In any case having information helps the staff not only protect the children but all those exposed in the school premises.

Each school should devise a basic preventive and critical situation handling plan. The basic precautions that every school must take are enumerated below.

• The premises of the school must be kept clean from all fecal matter, urine, vomit, and blood stains with a good quality disinfectant. There should be sufficient house keeping staff to ensure cleanliness at all times.

• Children must be cautioned about taking care when playing in the ground and wash properly with anti septic lotion when injury occurs. All schools must have a first aid kit compulsorily within the reach of children and staff for use in an emergency.

• The school must ensure p
roper disposal of used tissues, contaminated bottles, sharp objects and other infected materials. Any contact with these can leave the children gravely exposed to all kinds of infections.

• There has to be availability of gloves and all preventive materials when the children are making use of laboratory and experiments as part of the curriculum. There should also be facility for providing warm water, hand wash, disposable napkins etc in the rest rooms.

• The school has to maintain proper waste disposal bins at all primary locations and in the classrooms also. There must be separate disposal bins to segregate all the waste at the initial stage itself.

The school must inculcate healthy hygienic habits amongst children right from the beginning so that they can protect themselves and others as well.

With these basic precautions the children can be protected many initial viruses that are transferred through bloodborne pathogens. When the children are well informed they will be equipped to handle anxiety situations in a better way. Schools must conduct workshops to train support staff and teachers about the safety measures to ensure overall good health of everyone in the school.

One should remember that healthy children are the future of tomorrow and help with building a better society in the long run. Thus every care must be taken to prevent them from catching all kinds of bloodborne pathogens that can prove to be dangerous for their growth and development besides their bright futures.
